This was my favourite jewellery shop last time I was here, Alexander May. Made a couple of purchases.
It was a very wet day in Bath but we still managed to keep walking and looking around.
Then we visited Bath Abbey. This amazing Abbey was founded as a Benedictine monestery in the 8th century. A Noman cathedral was begun on the site in 1090 but was replaced by the present Abbey in the 16th century.
The inside is particularly beautiful with high vaulted ceilings and beautiful stained glass.
I was fascinated by the beautiful wooden carvings on the pews in the choir stands.
We then enjoyed a magnificent high tea in The Pump Room. This was where the Georgians "took the waters" during Jane Austen's time. A beautiful room and atmosphere.
Lovely ladies on tour.
Lyn and Mooneen.
Here I am with Glenda and Jan. Hi to all my Monday Stitchers Cupboard ladies, we miss you.
Savouries first.
Then cakes and scones. Delicious!
Back to the hotel for a rest and then out to a private tour of Number 1 Royal Crescent. This most prestigious address in Bath has been preserved as an eighteenth century townhouse. Absolutely delightful Rooms with full furnishings and
embellishments.
A model of the townhouse.
Private drinks in the servants room.
The kitchens on the bottom floor. Just imagine being a servant here with no running water, no bathrooms and no toilets.
The coolroom.
The housekeepers room.
The housekeeper had control of the spices.
Up one floor, the breakfast room, which became the men's study during the day and the card room in the evenings.
Notice the chamber pot in a little Cupboard at the side!
The library and room for curiosities.
Up one floor, the magnificent formal dining room.
The Music Room. Gorgeous.
Ladies Bedroom.
Sewing table.
Up another floor, the males bedroom.
Medicine box.
Then an amazing dinner at the Royal Crescent Hotel. A fabulous evening with beautiful food, great attentive service and wonderful company. Thank you Helen Bertram for an amazing experience.
Here is Glenda and Jan looking very glamorous.
I am ready for a lovely evening.
We had guinea fowl with caramelised onion, mashed potato and asparagus. Yum.
This was followed by a delicious Eton Mess (sorry, no photo). Another wonderful day.
Another wow day! I know there was great inequality in these times but they were so beautiful and so unhurried - if you were upstairs. May not have been so in the kitchen. Then you see the chamber pot and maybe we have some pluses in the modern world. 😊
ReplyDeleteYes Marg, some of the true stories are bizarre. They added to their eyebrows with mouse hair and slept in their tall wigs for weeks without taking them off. Occasionally they parted the back for the bugs to fall out! K x
DeleteBeautiful photos of this amazing tour Katrina
ReplyDeleteThe wood carving is indeed amazing.... more amazing that it has not worn down with centuries of wear.
